But don't forget that Azathoth is an idiot.Also, in some of the stories Cthulhu isn't actually one of the Old Ones, but a different species altogether, since his children warred with the Old Ones.

YOU DIE NOW!(j.k.), it's the Cthulhu Mythos, as created by H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft was a genius at horror/science fiction and influenced a lot of modern day horror writers.In Lovecraft's work, extraterrestrial gods/monsters ruled the earth in the far past and will one day return. These beings are called 'The Great Old Ones' and when the stars changed most of them left. Some lie sleeping under the earth, sea, or in space. When the stars are right they will return and humanity will go extinct.

One of my favorite 'Old Ones' from the Cthulhu Mythos is called Glaaki. He's a giant slug with metalic spines. He lives in the bottom of a lake and is very wise. He is served by a cult of undead worshippers. He stabs one of his spines into a victim and injects his body fluid into the poor soul. The victim then becomes his zombie slave. Some people foolishly approach him thinking they will be granted immortality, never realzing that it's 'not so great actually'.
