The 60's, especially after the British Invasion, ( highlighted by this clip from A Hard Day's Night ) , was a decade where the big record companies seemed a lot more tolerant of more "melodically-driven" music and of people's "quirks". That's the major difference between most mainstream music now and a lot of the mainstream music from the 60's. It seemed a lot more of the good music was heard by a mass audience. Unlike now, where it's pretty much shunned and denied exposure to a mass audience.

The mainstream part of music pretty much sucked in the 80's , especially the mid point of the decade. There was some good music in the 80's. Sadly, it was the music the mainstream pretty much ignored that could begin to compare with what The Beatles did: XTC, Robyn Hitchcock, Squeeze, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, The Church...If you're looking for good punkish stuff from the 80's, it would include: No Means No, DOA, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Public Image Limited, and Husker Du etc....
