i think well i know donnie had to die to back intime from saving gretchen because donnie also states i half to listen to frank he saved my life... from making him sleep walk out when it hit.. if he did not he wld not have met gretchin and saved her life so basically you were right iain1993 me and ym girlfriend always watch this movies

i think that the universe would end if he didn't go back in time and get hit by the engine also with iin1993 Gretchin wouldn't have died. If the universe would end he would be with Frank technically not alone but he chose to die alone so that others wouldn't get hurt thats what i got out of the movie. :)

I COULD BE WRONG, but I think it's to save Gretchin. Cause Gretchin dies, and so he goes back i ntime to get killed, therefore never meeting Gretchin. And if he never meets Gretchin, she's not at 'Grandma of Death's' house where she gets ran over by Frank, therefore never dies. Donnie also says something about if he dies, he then has something to look forward to or something like that in a monologue towards the end, and the thing he has to look forward to of course, is saving Gretchin... But idk

They were both written by Tears For Fears. Gary Jules made this cover of the song for Donnie Darko. The original is much older than the movie...

Jeez, people, come on. How hard would it be to do a quick search for who wrote Mad World? The original song was on Tears For Fears' LP The Hurting, way back in the early 80s.
