FYI, Patti was going through a very hard time;she had just lost her husband and she had two young children to provide for. Michael asked her to sing back-up on the song so that she could earn some money. I don't think that is a "poor excuse" at all, that is a caring, loving friend. And since the song is great anyway, we all gained from it :)
