Admirable in so many ways: elegance, balance, depth, stirrings of Sturm und Drang ...

I think he was a better cellist than teacher. I never saw or had a lesson but if you watch the lessons of him here on youtube (for example Dvorak concerto with Monika Leskovar) its not convincing.

I often wonder was Slava a better cellist or teacher?

An amazing performance backed by beautiful accompaniment. The best I've ever heard, I think...(with the possible exception of Emanuel Feuermann)

haha, i do prefer du pre's interpretation of this concerto though. of course, i still like rostropovich's version.

please stop the error crap, there will be nobody like The great Rostropovich, not even Maisky nor Yo yo ma, this is by far the best interpretation, I almost quit music after this

it's almost... dare i say it.. ambiguous though. if a note can be ambiguous, which i suppose it can't be, but with enough vibrato and if the note isn't sustained very long. if you really use your imagination it's a D lol

I think that most people who mark others down in those instances see or hear such a mistake (usually just hear) but they feel so touched and drawn in by such artistry that they need to defend it in some way. It's a natural reaction you know. I think we all heard the note. I also think that we all heard and will continue to hear (other vids) the mind-blowing artistry of this master of the cello, occational wrong notes and all.

yeah it is a little off. Interesting. They're human after all. Of course that in no way diminishes my huge respect and love for this titan of a musician and cellists. We've all made our share of mistakes in playing.

Hah- thanks for the humor- I know how you mean much of the time (violinist)
