...forgiven has proven that she was only a pawn of the East German state. It also helped that in here bid to get on the 94 German Olympic team, she skated to Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," advocating peace and dedicating her program to the innocent victims of the civil war in Yugoslavia, particularly the destruction of much of Sarajevo, where she won her 1st Olympic gold and where she had many fond memories.

I recall she somewhat admitted to it during the controversy regarding Ingo Steuer. In his defense, she knew that for the privileges offered to her by the state, that the athletes were to work do certain work for the state. In her defense, she had no idea what she had done was wrong. At the time, it was what was expected the athletes chosen to receive full state funding and support. Between 1991 and 1993, she had to fervently defend herself. Interestingly, by 1993/94 season, most was....

Well, she was a Stasi collaborator. Some of her files have been opened because she was a "beneficiary" of the GDR state so the normal privacy rules of Germany do not apply.Sorry, just the facts...
