In many instances the written word can have very little meaning without some insight into the thoughts that produced it. If you were open minded enough to attempt to understand the thoughts of others you might find that like Spock, you can appreciate their validity. From your comments you appear closed minded and vindictive as well as showing little of the understanding that you profess. As for my postmodern/postmodernist state, I fail to see the relevance.

I don't need to read your mind, you postmodern twit — I'm reading your WORDS, which indicate clearly that you understand neither Spock nor hippies. He said he was not even really SYMPATHETIC (possible exaggeration?), let alone being one himself! Thus you miss Spock's point that while he is very different from them, he can relate to their feeling of being strangers in their own land. As a fellow outsider, Spock can see the validity of their criticisms of the Federation's world.

You can't read my mind - only I know whether or not I missed the point.

You missed the point. Spock is not a hippie, but he UNDERSTANDS them. He himself claims to Kirk that he is not sympathetic but rather curious. Spock is the antithesis of the impulsive, rebellious hippies we see here, but he is openminded enough to appreciate the wisdom of the questions they ask and the peace they seek. And he sure can jam with them — rock on, Spock! |
