if you don't have brakes stick your foot in the tire it stops you, but don't stick it to far cause i broke my foot like that :P

You don't really need a light bike to be able to manual, it may be easier but you can still do 'em with a heavy bike, and most people say a bike with a heavy back really helps with manuals.
