I was a face in the EMS (Eastend Mod Squad) and that song brings back so many good times...

When it mentioned "right winged politics" I thought it was just your average day worker getting a kicking from a bunch of skinheads.

this song is so true in any country, go to pub, have a few ales after work, grab a take away, take it home to your gal and on the way home get rolled by a 'gang' of soft boys, who cant get laid,or fight on there own,its relevent in the 70's as it is now...damn good song mr weller...

Jesus, I know I'm old by the fact that most of the people who have posted about this song don't know anything about it. It's simply about a mindless, violent attack on an individual on his way home. There is no element of race. Only a white person in the UK would go home with a "take away curry". It's a song about pointlessness..... That kind of motiveless violence against a stranger seems almost unique to northern Europe or descendants thereof.

To me its about a man laying in a pool of his own blood after having the shit kicked out of him reminiscing on the last few minutes of his life before it happened (maybe he dies maybe not )as well as looking forward to what will happen to his wife - dont think its necessary to read to much more into it but hey music is different for all of us
