I think some people may reject this song because it sounds too much like an anthem for Christian identity politics. But the lyrics need not be interpreted as a reiteration of conservative sexual ethics and I am sure that this was not the intention of the writer anyway. The song has a meaning that transcends sexual matters. It is about the more general complementary relationship that exists between the masculine and the feminine, not only between individuals but within every individual.

I'm not sure but it is my impression that O'Connor's My Special Child is about an abortion she had and that the song also refers to her relationship with Gabriel. But I'm not sure. It's a very traumatic song and, in my opinion, one of her best. They are no longer together, that I know for sure.

I own US and have listened to this song so many times. I've always been a Peter Gabriel fan. I must say wow. I never realized Sinead sang on this song. I have CD but never bothered to look at the liner notes. DOH I watched the "fight the real power" SNL bit live as it happened that night. At the time, I was like, OK she tore a picture of the Pope. Public Enemy was HUGE at the time -- Do the Right Thing -- Fight the Power. I get it.
