I am a Canadian songwriter. I have always dreamed of Katarina Witt skating to my song. It is an original song about taking a long journey and searching for your destiny. Even though I am not famous, my song is a tribute to all those people who have overcome hardships to live their dreams. The song is called, "Where I Belong" by Vince Ravon. It is on youtube. Cohen actually WENT for all the Triple jumps. When Witt got nervous or didn't feel comfortable on the takeoff to a jump, she'd often just do a double. Downgrading your content is a mistake too. Who knows how well Witt would have been able to skate in a more demanding era. The fact remains that she usually didn't skate perfect and also didn't have very demanding competition when she won her titles. Would have been interesting to see Denise Biellmann stick around until 1988.

Who cares. She still is in another league from Cohen the splatfest queen. If you want to talk about competition who was Kwan's great competition. Tara was good but she lasted a couple years only. Irina who had horrible artistry, and still beat Kwan whenever she skated clean but in big events always made mistakes. Maria who had weak technical ability and weak artistry and no consistency. Cohen who as I mentioned was the splat queen, had shallow edges, no speed, tiny jumps.

Witt didn't have much competition in her day (at least not any that the judges wanted to grade fairly). FYI, Witt tried to do harder jumps and wasn't consistent with them. In the early 80's she was trying the Triple Flip in her Long Programs, but couldn't do it cleanly, and then later on she scheduled a Triple Loop (which she only managed to do at 1987 Worlds, which is by far her best performance).

I love Witt's technique and artistry both way more then Sasha Cohen. Cohen only did harder jumps since everyone did harder jumps then. If she were around in 88 she wouldnt do any harder jumps then Witt, probably easier. Witt's high technically sound jumps are much better then Cohen's puny flutzing jumps. Cohen may have prettier toepoint and positions but Witt's overall artistry is much better. Anyway Witt is a legend, and Cohen is just a bridesmaid who never won anything that mattered.
