George Orwell - A Life in Pictures "SOMEBODY HAD a huge amount of fun making George Orwell: A Life in Pictures (BBC Two, Sunday) — the producer-director Chris Durlacher to be precise. In my college teaching days, we would get our media students to try to mimic the photographic or film styles of the past. They were useful and usually popular exercises. This biography turned out to be the Media Studies exercise to end them all. The narrator Barbara Flynn explained that there are no moving images of George Orwell nor surviving recordings of his voice. Given that we have wax cylinders of Tennyson croaking his way through The Charge of the Light Brigade, this is disappointing." http://entertainment.timesonli...

It's a shame Langham's scandal has tarnished the best documentary by the BBC for a very, very long time. He was very good in it, though. I hope someone can post the rest.It was brilliantly made.

Yes, it doesn't matter who is elected president. The privacy rights of Americans don't exist. It's sad really. That our own government has no respect at all for its citizens. America, China, and Russia have this in common. England can be thrown in there is well.

You're writing this *after* Obama was elected?

It sucks that not enough real pictures of Orwell were used. I don't want that sick rapist of children Langham taking his place.

Gee, who would think that such a brilliant man would sow the seed for what America is doing right now against it's own population? Goes to show you what idiots do with the work of a cautionary genius.

Around twelve years before his death Orwell said of the Spanish Civil War that he "should probably have joined the anarchists". Later, around the time of writing 1984, he expressed doubts about Anarchism. Who knows, but why did he have to pin his colours to the mast and proscribe one fixed dogma like socialism or conservatism or anarchism or whatever? Surely there are as many approaches to given societal situations as there are variables in every human negotiation. Does one size fits all work?
Interbrigadist (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
He was left. But he was against the opression in USSR. USSR under Stalin was not a socialist state. It was a dictature of Stalin. Stalin killed lots of communists in the 1930ies.Orwell was fighting in the spanish civil war at the side of the interbrigades. But the interbrigades were splitted by the stalinists. Lots of brigadists were killed at the big "cleaning". Read the book "animalfarm" and read between the lines. Its interesting.
