This movie is brilliant. I've heard people of that era say that to call LaMotta a prick would be an insult to pricks everywhere. I saw a couple of film students on youtube from Australia try to interview him and he was as rude as he could be. They just wanted to meet their idol.

One of my favorite movies, the scenes are so real--such as in the beginning when Jake was arguing with his wife--that you're almost embarrassed because it's as if you're eavesdropping on a domestic fight. From what I've heard, LaMotta was such an animal that DeNiro made him look like a saint. I think the whole point of the movie is that LaMotta's biggest enemy was outside the ring--himself. DeNiro deserved his Oscar.
