Coltrane does seem to play in a dimension beyond the ones he plays with especially when you compare sax players. I loved Cannonball Adderly because I saw him live but the more I listened to his playing and Coltrane on the All Blues album of Miles Davis the more I realized Adderly was good but Coltrane was way beyond him and the same is true here comparing him with Getz.

You know I have listened to this clip for a couple of years now & everything U say is true. However, I just think that in the spirit of truth that we must say that Coltrane is almost (for the time period, anyhow) from a different planet! Getz and Oscar and everyone sounds GREAT but, come on, am I wrong in saying that Coltrane is tapped into some kind of something that is beyond words? I have loved Getz as a kid and have had 20 albums - Coltrane too. I had most everything & gave em away. Sonny!

It wasn't uncommon for jazz musicians to write a new song based off of the chord structure of an existing tune. For instance, "Donna Lee" uses the chords of "Indiana".

wow- Getz and Trane had very different sounds and styles but they could certainly sound great playing together, couldn't they? This was great to see/ hear. It seemed like Getz loosened up after Trane's solo and this was the most creative I ever heard him play. This must be about 30 year old video. Great piano solo too, by ? |
