i'd like to point out that i prefer reading comments like these (yours) instead of, "i love this song", or "beautiful", etc etc which are pretty much pointless since there is a rating system.i think that jens used the term 'pen pal' to relate to the title, hence, 'postcard'. personally, i think the term 'pen pal' could very much be just as close as a 'friend', so there isn't much difference, but thats just a personal opinion.

It's something I think every time I watch the video and find interesting. The song is based on the story of Jens and Nina and any detail about their relationship can affect/enrich the context. If Nina was a good friend, you'd expect that Jens would play along. If she was just somebody he barely knew, only through correspondence, then his playing along is that much more remarkable. He could have said screw this and walked away, but he would not to a good friend. Relevant enough?

I don't understand why Jens corrects himself saying that Nina was his "pen pal" as opposed to his "friend." The story would make as much sense either way, unless he was trying to convey that he didn't know Nina well enough to call her a friend. There's no indication either way really.
