Its naked short selling which is the problem. Trillions lost and the SEC looked the other way the entire time.

short selling has been banned in Australia, but only for the period ending Sept 08 - beginning October 08. This new law was passed by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Seems pointless if only for 4 weeks

1. Read it - considered essential reading - like it.2. Obv. stock focussed but good views and like it.3. Not read it. Have to bear in mind ability to replicate given how many people have more info/closer to market. Not core to profitable saving and investing approach for majority.4. Same as 3. Verifiable track record is very important.5. I like these more fundamental books - not read this one.Ones that I really know and would recommend on my site.Hope it helps - best regards, Michael

for shorting in general, how long is the turn around time from borrow, to giving back?hey while i have your attention, for my education do you agree with these books:1. the intelligent invester2. common stocks and uncommon profits3. trading for a living4. long term secrets to short term trading5. naked economics.

It is short-selling without having the borrowed the security, or arranged for the borrowing of the security. It causes problems because it can mean stocks are shorted that are not available for borrow i.e. it does not take into account even the number of shares, much less the number avail. for shorting. It also causes trades to fail if stock is then not delivered to counterparty expecting it.

what is naked short selling?
shakaama (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
on cnbc one of the guests said if a company topples because of short selling, then it was the companie's fault for having bad management, and the stock was overvalued to begin with.I just don't agree with all these bailouts. isn't capitalism the rule thatyou have a right to fail?

Some US Pension funds have stopped lending stock and in UK have restricted net new shorts - meaning shorts that are not against a similar long position. At time of writing, very volatile markets and significant short selling can change fundamental outlook for company too much. Short selling however in normal markets is a part of price discovery. Lot of headlines and dynamic situation.
