Tongue Tied - South Korea

April 2005Learning English is so important in Korea that parents are paying out to have their kids' tongues modified to help English pronunciation. It's a trend worrying the government. Many parents are convinced their children won't be able to learn English properly because their tongues are the wrong shape. This has led to growing business among surgeons prepared to modify children's tongues. "We cut this band and release the tongue and then it can move freely," explains Dr Jin. Learning English has become a national obsession. The pressure begins before birth when mothers play English nursery rhymes to their babies in the womb. One year olds have private tutors. By high school, children often study from 7 am to midnight. "Education has become a social disease," complains university professor Dr Lee. In the past 50 years, Korea has increased its GDP by 200%. The investment in education has paid off. But for children, has it come at too high a price?

P.S. The part about the dad being separated for 7 years made me really sad. That must be so lonely.

can i just say the reasons why korean school kids study so hard is that its hard to get jobs over there and if u want a decent life, you have to be better than the others, which is why the study so hard. harder than uk or usa or wherever.

My friends are frome South Korea. They have told me it's hard to get a job over in South Korea. It's even harder if you dont know another language. South Korea does alot of trading in over seas countries so knowing another language looks better on a job transcript.

Shryke2010, They do that because every child on this planet is forced to do that, it's an obligatory subject in most counries. If you don't know it and fail then you won't have a chance for good life. They will not allow you to enter any university or work in some company that exports overseas.

destroying their culture? little harsh dont you think? just in what way are they destroying the korean culture? they are just trying to give their kids a heads up in a highly competitive environment. i agree that surgery may not be the best option but you have to understand the parents positions. i am half korean when i stick my tongue out it probably sticks out only half an inch out from my lips but i speak prefect engrish :D
xxmsp91 (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
