The problem lies with inbreed dogs...if you looked at a pic of a gsd from when they were first introduced to england...they look nothing like todays gsd's...todays gsd would find it hard to do what is was naturally bred for...shows like crufts judge dogs on looks not on working ability...and due to too much inbreeding most kc reg breeds have suffered and now have many more health risks...breeders are breeding out faults but in doing so are slowly killing off the breeds of dogs they produce.

the sad thing is this condition occurs because the show dogs of this breed have been bred in such a way that ensures the dog matches the visual standards of dog show guides, which means a show german shepherd must have a 'sloping back'. the working variety of this breed used by the police force rarely suffers from hip deisplasia and coincidently don't have sloping backs.i think its sad dogs are bred in a way that endangers their health for superficial reasons :(

Unfortunately although the breed is known to stuffer bad hips...poor breeding of GSD's not suitable has contributed greatly to this disease...back yard breeders do not care for the comformation and quality of the dogs they are breeding in the same way a well known KC reg breeder would do. I am very careful now when buying any GSD and have it hip scored. But because i love the breed i wouldnt let this effect me owning one...im just more picky with the dog or bitch i choose.

Its sad cuz the german shepherd is such a beautiful and athletic dog that because of this disease I didn't want to involve myself in purchasing a german shepherd, because there is such a high chance nowadays that a german shepherd puppy has hip dysplasia.
